On the E46 yes it has, on the E36, no. Well not in either of mine anyway.

Might be a stupid question but whats the difference between E46 & E36??

They are the model numbers which change according to when the car was made. E36 is the one that was out (roughly) 1994-1999, and E46 is the shape that is out at the moment.

E46

E36

and just for neatness

E30

Thanks for that. I was thinking of the new model but thanks for clearing that up. Only just started researching buying one. I have been searching for a new car for a while and narrowed it down to a MY03 M3 or a MY04 Z4 3 litre. Still not sure what to get. With the summer coming would like the Z4 but really want the M3. May get Z4 for the summer then trade it against an M3 towards the end of the year. Although would probably lose a bit of money. Anyone got any opinions on the above

'nuff said really. Seems to me that you'd always wish you'd gone for the M3.

How about getting an M3 cab, best of both worlds, surely?

If I go for a soft top I would never go for one that wasnt originally designed to be a soft top. If I got a cab it would have to be the Z4. Think your right M3 is the one I would really like to have.

Probaly been asked, but what's people's thought about whether it's worth paying the extra for a CSL over a regular E46 M3?

Do they do an SMGII version of the CSL? Are they holding money any better?

They only do a SMGII CSL, no manual option.

and, as to whether the CSL is worth the extra, if you want all the toys in a fast, exciting car, go for the "normal" M3. If you want extra edge and to track the car, but are less concerned about leather, cruise control and armrests, go for the CSL.

19's look better, but 18's are better for driving, IMO. I've had an M3 with 19's and I felt it tram-lined a fair bit. A mate of mine writes for Evo, and he verbally abused me when I said I had 19's on it.

What extra....can't be much in it! Forget the toys...who needs them, buy a CSL. They look fantastic, far better than standard IMO. Ok so not the most practical and you might lose your licence real quick...but that noise....and the gearbox is pretty damn good really.

Thanks. I obviously have some learning to do here! I've got a Griff 500 at the moment, so I suspect even the CSL will be luxurious in comparison, and yes, I will track it. I was undecided about the gearbox, so if I decide on a CSL, that decision will be made for me, by the sounds of it.

Can someone briefly list the differneces between std and CSL, and where the CSL lacks std kit, say whether it can be added as an option (that way I know what I will definitely be sacrificing and what I could put back in).

Many thanks in advance...

Well, I'll try.

As standard, the CSL has:
no radio or CD (no-cost option, but most have them),

no air-con (again most have it),

no xenons (probably most have them, but a fair number don't)

no leather - the seat are cloth and alcantara

no sunroof (obviously)

no manual gearbox option

no navigation (not offered, even as an option, so if you want it, you need to go aftermarket)

no phone (as per navigation)

no airbags in the doors and no option for rear airbags

no rear blind option

no heated seat option

no cruise control

no toolkit

That's an excellent start, Zod. So what extra bits do you get with the CSL? I'm aware that the roof and bumpers are cf, and it has different wheels (18s or 19s) and has a bit more power, but what else?

Only two colours Sapphire Black and Silver Grey (SG slightly more common) - a total of 422 produced for the UK.

CSL also comes with ultra grippy Mitchlin Pilot Cups and special CSL alloys.

Thanks. Had a look at one at Damon Hill in Warwick yesterday. I'm having a drive of one back to back with a std M3 next week, which hopefully will confirm I really should be going for the CSL.

Just got to shift my Griff now.....
