BMW 645 SMG Box Question...

Hi all - new here. My usual haunt is scoobynet, but I'm just about to sell up my STI and get a 645 Coupe.

Test drove one at the weekend - auto box. Lovely engine, but I fancy the SMG. Garage can't get hold of one for me to test, so I'm left huting round message boards to see what people think. I've read mixed views of BMW's SMG box - good for M3, poor on 330Ci and lower models - I assume they are different boxes.

Anyway, what I'm interested in is people's first hand views of the SMG box in the 6 series - assume it's the same smg box on a 630 and 645? I'd go for it if I thought it could be set up for nice smooth changes (with the kids and wife on board), then more racey on my own. Is the SMG box the same as the forthcoming one in the M6? Same as the M3 one? If it's the 330 one, then maybe it's not for me?

The papers over the weekend (telegrapg, times) were not complementary when fitted to the M6.

The SMG box on the 630 and 645 is not the same as the M6 box. All are an acquired taste. However you are spot on in your assumption that it is as crap as the 330 box...

Plus dealers dont understand them... We get confused, prefer auto's...

Stick with an Auto if its the 645 on a 630 a manual wont kill it but an SMG will damage the resale on both models...

BMW autoboxes are crap. Get a proper stickshift 6 speed with 3 pedals on the floor.
