Apparently the BM's front brakes are coming up for replacement. Of course they are the size of a planet and (as expected) will cost a fair amount to replace.

I think the discs are around £150 each, plus pads and labour means around £450 from a main dealer.

Firstly, are there any alternatives to OEM parts ? I know the brakes are a weak point on M5s so it would be really nice to put something uprated on there, but i'm not keen on spending £3K for some AP racing discs/calipers. Are there any like-for-like replacements which are perhaps better?

If not, has anyone replaced theirs recently ? Know anywhere which would offer a better price on the parts - and are they difficult to replace? I've done the Renaults discs/pads before, and that was ok. Are they as easy on the bimmer?

Ta!
Marc

Stoptech discs and 4 pot calipers seem well reviewed and received by M5 owners. You'll pay about £1800 for the bits plus a couple of hundred for fitting.

The OEM discs on my M5 seem to last between 3-5000 miles before they warp and render the car nearly undriveable. The cause of this has yet to be determined, but wheel bearings have just been changed as the latest suspect. I've been through 4 sets of discs in the last year/20000 miles

IMHO, unless the car is regularly used for track days, stick to the original discs and pads. You should pay around £390 for the bits, and 1 hour's labour to fit. IMHO, it should not be necessary to fit a big brake kit to an M5 unless you use it to its absolute limit on a regular basis.

To be fair, the discs/pads have lasted really well, so I shouldn't really have any complaints - obviously I don't drive it hard enough ..

Would love to try it out on a track though - I think it would be odd to be hacking around Brands in something so civilised!

The stoptechs are well worth the upgrade, standard oems tend to overheat & fade quite early with all that mass when you're really pressing on, it's reassuring to know you can still stick it to the road even with hot brakes if some numptie should happen to pull out from a side road oblivious to your approaching speed, infact its entirely possible to lock the fronts in the dry at 100mph [with a nice little chirp] for a split second before the abs cuts in.

I've tried the movit/brembo [996 turbo?] kit on the 5-series before and wasn't really impressed [although a lot depends on pad compound] with the balance and bias etc. The pedal was very soft and spongy by comparison, something to do with larger caliper piston sizes or volume capacity on the servo.
