Went out saturday, looking to trade my 993 in for a 2nd hand M3 2001 on,but from non main dealers i am getting many horror stories of the motors going bang regularly, and that although BMW look after warranted owners well, with a new replacment, they want to keep this problem a secret.is this a load of bull or fairly true?

Some engines have blown. "Regularly" is an overstatement. There have been a couple of recalls to fix the issues. The problem is no secret, there was a published article in a mag a few months ago. Due to the cost of components / labour, it's always advisable to only look at M3's with BMW Warranty / BMW Extended warranty - there's plenty around to choose from. You can always check with a dealer if the necessary recalls have been done and the general history of the car.

I am not aware of any cases of engine problems since the last recall. The engine is like most high performance engines: it has its issues and is expensive to fix when it goes wrong, but that is all made up for by what it does the rest of the time.

There's been plenty of issues with the early 993 and early 996s , so problems are not unique to M3's.
Also, compared to the likes of TVR, beemers are fairly reliable.

If you just want something 100% reliable , buy Japanese. But, if you want a a proper driving experience .. an M3 is hard to beat for the money (IMHO)

Hey , the sun is shining ... got to go drive around with my top off!

Get real! Just examine the record of Porsche and Ferrari for engine issues. Anyway, I've had three M3s in the last four years, done 10000 miles a year and not had a single problem.

Pleased to hear that you have both had good ownership experiences, however I am trying to understand the failure rate in the whole population

I think it's reasonably safe to assume that the recall for crankshaft bearing shell replacement has fixed the problem that caused certain cars' engines to develop issues.

Buy one with confidence ..

Come to www.bm3w.co.uk and ask. There are loads of us there and we are realistic about our cars (we are a load of whingers!).
