Thanks for your advice last November/December when helping me to choose my company car.

I took delivery of it on Tuesday and, whilst have only gone 200 miles owing to the snow and still running it in, think I'm going to like it.

A couple of things that concern me though:

The sports suspension makes the ride very rough. Going over those multiple yellow lines that try to influence you to slow down at roundabouts was fun the first time but could get grating eventually.

No spare tyre and I don't believe my model has run flats.

Feels a bit 'loose' on the motorway when it's windy.

Other than that though it's comfortable, not too big, looks cool inside and out and very nippy. I don't want to buy into all the BMW sales pitch but it feels more of a drivers car than the Golf 1.9TDi that I had on rental.

Has anyone got any comments on the above and the comments I've heard that it is not good in the wet.

Unfortunately as it's a company car I can't 'mod' it but would love to add a few customisations.....

Cheers again
Ed

I got a 320d es in Dec of last year, as a company car. I have since coverd 7k in it and love it as an everyday car.

I was using/still have a 2002 525Sport whitch is fully loaded and cost the first owner well over double the value of the 320d. The 320 drives every bit as good as the 5 and if I honest is much more fun when hacking B-roads.

The 320 is a right drift machine when you want it to be. The only thing that holds it back is the lack of revs to play with.

I'm over the moon with mine. I have fun driving it on a daily basis and my trips to the pumps are few and far between. I'm getting 42MPG which is 60% M-way 40% city.

It shouldn't feel loose on the motorway dear boy...

You have got a spare - its under that plastic tray which is under the carpet in the boot. Undo the wingnut on top take out the plastic cover - Hey presto, good old space saver.

Oh and not good in the wet? Who says? The traction control and all that corner brake control malarky will sort any sideways slidy problems you have...

its fine in the wet. See for yourself...

congrats. But I still think ES stands for "Extra Sh^te". No multi-function steering as standard on a £20k car- no thanks.

I have to agree with the comments here, had a Compact 320td ES for a couple of weeks and a couple of thousand miles. It's 6 speed, so at 90 is very quiet and loads of grunt to overtake.

Also have to agree with Scoobz, it's great in the wet and the DSC/CBC is fab in the slippy stuff we've had oop north recently, saved my bacon already.

Handles better than the 328 I traded too (on 235 tyres!)

Just waiting to 'benchmark' against some other sporty types now

How many functions does a steering wheel need? I'd suggest turning the front wheels is the only important one.

The Multi Wheel does the Stereo Volume, Skips Tracks, Searchs stations, operates the phone and has Cruise... For the Massive cost of about £200 you could opt for one...

The whole point of the ES was to get a 320d sub £21000 and still include some niceness...

Which it does...

So hardly "extra shite" then. My 3 series only has 1 button on the steering wheel - I assume that makes it rubbish

What about cruise control??? Climate Control???? Not standard on a £20k car.

No, climate isn't but A/C is standard and cruise comes as part of the multi function wheel...

And yes its 20 grand...

Go look at merc's rival and Audi's... See what you get for your money, see which drives better and see which will cost less to run...

Better cancel that Carrera GT order then.

Since when did a "multi function" steering wheel mean anything?

I want a steering wheel that does just one thing. Steer the car and provide some feeback in the process.

I know how good the E46 is and that it is considerably better than its rivals. It was simply my opinion that climate, cruise, m/f steering should be standard on such a car.

As for stating that a Carrera GT has no m/f steering. I thought that the Carrera GT was a track day/ supercar, where as a E46 (bar M3 CSL) is a small exec. That's a fair comparison then.

Your opinion is your opinion and you are entitled to it, however your policy of slagging off other peoples cars marks you out as a bit of an idiot. HTH.

Not to mention the obsession with steering wheel buttons. If you want lots of those, you go to Fisher Price not a sodding car company!
