I've just bought a 1996 BMW 325TDS. It's already done 128k but it's in great shape and the power delivery is great. The car is going to do a lot of miles though with me.
Anyone have any thoughts on the 325TDS? Have I made a good choice to do a high mileage in? What am I likely to get to the gallon on the motorway (which is where it'll spend most of it's time) if I don't thrash it?

Cheers

Trev.

If the mileage is genuine with full main dealer service history 128k is relatively low for a beamer, ive had them come in px with double that and they've still had some life in them,as for mpg I couldnt tell you as ive never run one on long distances, but bound to be frugal and between 32-55mpg.

Thanks for that. It hasn't got fully stamped up history but the owner's a real enthusiast and actually works for a garage himself, and has either done all the servicing himself or his mates have done it, and literally made sure every little thing is spot on. The car looks and sounds very well, and goes like a rocket. Here's hoping it'll be okay anyway.

Are they prone to any particular problems, because they do seem very well built?

My 525 TDS has the same engine and really came alive when I fitted a performance chip. It now gives the petrol version a run for its money but still gives me around 40mpg even when thrashed.

Having said all that I now want to change the car for the 325 TDS as I don't carry many passengers nowadays and commute over 1000 miles per week - the extra 10 mpg makes a hell of a difference to my monthly fuel bill.

[crosses fingers] 225K miles and still going strong![/crosses fingers]
