My light came on, i had Birds In Middlesex have a look and it was actually the seat belt tensioner that was faulty. (same light comes on for it)

It was £18 in parts and very little labour costs as it did not take long at all.

I have had a similar problem. Does your wife / girlfriend shove pointy shoes under the passenger seat? (When she doesn't have them on)

These can interfere with wiring that causes the airbag light to come on.

Either that or it is the seatbelt tensioner, and can even be caused by adjusting the seat back (if you have airbags in the seats ie VW golf recaro's......hateful car....had 2 both pants)

Most BMW air bag problem are the seat belt tensioner or the wiring to it, the wire is too short and when you push the seat back it send the light on , the mod is to fit the longer wiring kit
Also if it comes on at odd times it may be one of the seat pads, ie only comes on with a passenger in the seat.Alas it can only be turned off with the air bag tool
