We are replacing our present tourer, and have been looking at the 328i tourer auto, one has come up and I need some advice of what to look out for as possible problem areas, the engine block has been replaced because of the nikasil problem, but are there any problems that these models are known for, also, what are they like on fuel mpg.

I had a 328i saloon on a p plate. The fuel consumption was fantastic for the size of engine. I think 22-30mpg was the norm.
I (and many others) had a problem with the digital air conditioning switching itself on and off randomly. This I believe is the only other problem they are blessed with. (Apart from nicasil). If yours has this problem, don't worry you dont need a new unit, there is an easy fix that I have somewhere for it.
Oh yes, the electric windows sometimes have a bit of a mind of their own, this is usually the motor, again, not a problem to fix.

I've had a '95 328i Automatic Touring for the past 5 years. Been a pleasure to own. Fuel consumption averages about 25mpg, but on a good motorway run, using the cruise control as much as possible, you get 32- 33mpg at a constant 80mph. At that speed the engine's only doing about 2200rpm.
Other than routine servicing costs, around £200p.a. at a local independent, the only problem I've had was a failure of the gearbox ecu.

Get a 540 sparky. My 540 is managing mid 20's at anything from congested roads, to pipe clearing 'progress' making speeds. Plus with all that torque it doesn't work hard at all.
Sounds odd, but it is actually BETTER on fuel than my previous 523i steptronic....weird but true...They are brilliant all rounders. Mine isn't a touring, but there is a nice 540 touring on ebay at the moment....

Mike, you must really like that motor - you've been singing it's praises on just about every forum.
I was thinking either 530 or 530d, but in view of your enthusiasm for it, I'll have to try a 540.
