When buying a 2.8 Z3, around 25k 40k miles, what should I look out for?

Nicasil issue (premature engine bore wear) - do a search, its been talked about a few times here.

Have a look at a Honda S2000 - seriously, its a much better car and still a current model which means better residuals.
