Just been passed this from a friend, if it's correct - its a total piss take.

As of 13th Jan the following prices will take effect.

BMW WARRANTY INSURANCE

MINI Current £390 From 13-1-05 New £502

3 Series " Old £510 " New £720

5+6+ X5 Series Old £620 " New £970

7 + 8 Series Old £730 " New £1513

Ive just spoken to BMW Warranty and it's true - the prices are correct. I have registered a complaint - Call 0208 239 3920 if you want to also.

Slight glimmer of hope; If your current warranty expires in the next 90 days, you can pay NOW before the deadline and get the current pricing - I miss that by a month or so.

This may well cost BMW more in the long run, because if I bin the warranty, I can use quality independant garages instead of the lousy service I currently 'enjoy' from BMW UK.

This is bad.....

I'm no expert but I think you'll find that certain legislative changes mean that the warranties now have to be fully underwritten which is costing BMW significantly more. Or something to that effect anyway

A price increase is one thing but these increases are ridiculous.

Unfortunately when it comes to resale a BMW warrantee is worth every penny!

Yes that's exactly what they told me.

Anyone want to buy a 540i sport with 5 months warranty remaining?

The poor sod that bought my previous car will need all the warranty he can get.

Do people think this is still true if part-exchanging? I know FSH and the like has never influenced the trade-in price on previous cars of mine (although they have been lower value vehicles to start with.

Does anyone believe that a FSH and warranty on a T plate E36 Cab is worth maintaining, especially considering that I am more likely to part-ex it in a few years than sell it privately.

When you look at what the warranty covers and the way the BMW (IMHO) generally do honour their warranty conditions, then I still reckon its worth it.

I had an extended warranty on a previous 330d and I reckon it saved me close on £7k when the engine failed because the fuel pump had exploded. Unless you "know" that you can afford to fix anything that the warranty might cover at significantly less than BMW prices and that you are unlikely to have anything go wrong, then I see it as good insurance.

Its not about re-sale values, its about piece of mind when you are out and about. Mind you, at £800 a year its a bit of a wallet-cruncher!

£970 for a 5 series! I pay less than that on my 996tt. From 1994 to 2002 I ran a used 735iSE and never bothered with a warranty, wouldn't have needed to claim on anything even if I had taken out the warranty.

Are today's cars not built properly, so that warranty's are essential? increased claims would explain the warranty price increases?

The dilema I have, is whether to stump up the £970 to protect the perceived resale value of the car with a warranty - or stuff the warranty and save a grand.

If you saw two identical 2nd hand cars side by side for sale, how much (if any) would you pay extra for the one with the BMW warranty?

If you intend to p/x the car come sale time then don't bother (for re-sale value) as it won't make any difference.

The BMW warrantee's are good and the peace of mind element is important. I think as new cars become more complex and reliant on electronics unfortunately warrantee's become essential.

I'd personally still prefer a car that you don't have to plug into a laptop to find out what's wrong with it.

Daz, I can tell you first hand. On the late model I-Drive cars you are mad to let a warranty expire. A single control unit will cost 2k. My car had in excess of 20K in warranty work carried out before I got fed up and handed it back!

Think we'll be letting it lapse with the M3. It's due an Inspection 2 & warranty renewal this year and at main delaer prices that'd be £1600 ish!

That pays for a lot of repairs (even a Vanos!) and as the car is now only worth £12k ish I doubt it'll affect it's value much.

The warranty also gives you breakdown cover throughout Europe and also MOT failure cover.
I wouldnt do without the warranty - some of the prices for parts failure are very steep.

Looks like it might have been me!

Got my M3 SMG back yesterday afternoon after an extended test drive with the top mechanic, and this morning lost all forward gears 30 miles away from home.
If it hadn't been for the warranty I'd be walking to work tomorrow. Mondial {the warranty company} have given me 4 days in a 316SE which has cost them £225. And thats the second time I've had a hire car since October.

Therefore, I think the warranty's worth every penny

I'm pretty much compelled to pay the £720 in May (paid £510 last yr) as my car spends more time at the steelers than anywhere else. Its an O1 Y E46 318I SE with 84k, its had a new gearbox, steering parts, 2 speedos and OBCs, numerous suspension parts, mirror motors, accelerators cables, valves etc etc. I think the engine is next.

I've never understood why the Sale of Goods act, which says that goods must be of satisfactory quality doesn't seem to apply to cars?
Aspects of quality are fitness for purpose, freedom from minor defects, appearance and finish, durability and safety.
Durabilty is that item should last a reasonable length of time.

It's the durability aspect that's the tricky one, but for domestic appliances for example, I understand it's considered to be 5 yrs (I always assumed that why manufacturers and shops sell 5 yr w'tees. I've had stuff repaired at 3 yrs old (after making a little fuss).

So surely, say, an ECU on a quality car like a BMW should be expected to last for 5 yrs, maybe even longer? If manufacturers had to pay to fix all these problems out then they'd soon sort out their own quality levels. it might hold back the introduction on new technology (like I-Drive) but some would say that's a good thing.

Not sure when the increases come into effect, or if they already have> but when this was first mentioned a few months ago, people were taking out the warrenty before the price invrease, and you good renew it a few months before it was due (and lose no months of course)
Maybe too late for this now though. Luckily mine is just a year old now.

Changed to the new rates around Jan 14th.
