Just throwing some ideas around my head here.

Looking for a second car for the family that i'd be insured as the main driver on. It will be the car i use whenever i'm not in London, and possibly end up taking over completely post uni. Mum currently has a 3-series saloon (new shape... E46?)

Criteria isn't that detailed, other than ideally a hatchback so she can use it for runs to the tip, load carrier etc.

My criteria is a reasonably fun car, so i don't fancy an estate Her criteria is reasonably new and reliable.

Thought about a 3-series compact... i'm SURE they're a hatchback. I know Adamt loved his (about to email you mate if you're reading this) but anyone else own one? What are they like?

Any decent sites to read up on the cars?

It will be a lower engined one as insurance is still a bit scary for me as i've got no NCB (thus planning to build a bit up on this).

Cheers all

Adamt

Cheers for the mail Andy.

I loved ours. The reason was because though it was a hatchback it never felt anything less than a completely grown up and complete car. Interior was pure BMW and pretty much identical to your mum's e46.

Handling is superb, hooning round country lanes is what the car is made for. The suspension is compliant and predictable. It is an absolute hoot to drive.

The only problem is, we had the 318ti, that though the engine is extremely smooth and very good near the top of the rev range it is not quick, at all. This is because the car is quite heavy.

I would go for the compact, i think used prices will be quite low as the new One(pardon the pun ) has just been released,

Keep us posted, the compact is a fantastic car.

all the best

Just popped into the local BMW dealer. They've got a couple of examples but none at the showroom so i couldn't check boot space, comfort etc.

I'm gonna try and get a test-drive next time i'm back in Oxford.

cheers for your views Adam. see you at vmax

I had a 325ti Sport compact before my M3 and it was a cracking little car.

Ride on the 18's was a little crashy over country lanes but it was nearly as quick as a 330i and handled really well.

As said already the interiors exactly the same as an E46 3 series - going for not much money now as well
