Have seen a 2001 E46 M3 with 100.000 miles (well 155.000 km) for sale in Brussels at 25.000 euro (that would be £17.000 or so?).

Now, the price is good, and so is the specification (sat nav, 2x wheels: summer/winter, etc).

However, what is the wisdom on the mileage on this engine? With the recent recalls, it might even have been replaced but would you go for a relatively high-mileage car, that is about 1/3 below the price for an "average" mileage car?

(I know, I should go for it!)

My MCoupe (the Z version) has now done 103,000 miles without any troubles at all. Bought it 2 years ago with 6K on it. Car first registered in Jan 2002, so is an S54 model running the same engine as the M3 (yes I know that ther are some small differences!)

Strangely BMW aren't recalling any of the M Coupe versions of this engine unlike some of the M3 Coupe.

But mileage wise thay are pretty bomb proof.

Rassi, 100K is fine; it is a BMW after all! There are plently of e36 M3 doing that type of mileage.

However with that age, it is likely that the warranty will be out too. If the engine 'goes' then you are talking very expensive, 8-10K sterling perhaps. The engine has it's origins in the e36 evo and is the same as the coupe and Z3M but different exhausts etc so it is well proven. However the e46 raised the power by another 20 odd bhp; some are fine but many have had engine problems! Witness the story in Autocar recently. People will also argue that early cars will always be more likely to destruct than later ones, if the engines do show this sort of trend.

I'm assuming it is LHD which tend to be cheaper than RHD for some reason, is there any other LHDs with less mileage for the same-ish money from the same place? Does it have a full SH? How many owners? It is a great car for the money, but big, big bills if it goes wrong.

Post the same message on www.bm3w.co.uk and see what answers you get!

Cheers!

Thanks guys!

I am based in Belgium, so it has to be LHD. I will give it a call tomorrow, but I need to get rid of my MB C43 first...

Main problem is that it is a private owner, so probably no warranty if it hasn't been extended.
