I want to get a roof rack set for my 5 series (E39 - Yr 2000)to carry bikes and surf board.

Just wondering about the best options - is a bmw genuine roof rack best ? Looking at some pictures, it seems to fit without needing those clamps that run into the door openings.

Alternatively, I've seen some thule / CAM systems for less money, but that do not appear to fit as simply.

Anyone got any experience on this - Is it worth getting the proper BMW job ?

I've got a thule rack set. It's a bit fiddly to get fitted but once it's on it aint coming back off by mistake. They do interchangeable mountings so you can pay £30ish and use the whole lot on anotehr car.

We bought a Thule job from Halfords for the M5 - I don't think it was anything posh but was certainly cheaper than the BMW OEM jobby. It didn't really seem that secure and I was convinced that it'd permanently damage the rubbers around the doors due to the way it fitted (can't remember exactly how it worked).

So we took it back and got the BM version. Have to say that it's a doddle to fit and is completely and utterly immovable! Definately worth it i'd say. It also fits E46 3-series cars too.

ps. It is quite 'tall' though - if you're concerned about aesthetics and all that. I'll see if I can dig out a picture ..
