Hi,

I have a 2003 X5 4.6is and was contemplating an upgrade to the 4.8. Usual bollocks from the dealer about how rare the 4.8 is and how common the 4.6 is.

Oh if I had a fiver for every time I've heard that!!!!!

Anyway, I started to think about upgrades for the 4.6. Can anyone recommend any sensible upgrades that can be done. I'd prefer to avoid major mods such as turbo's and superchargers, but would be interested in trying to extract another 30-50bhp. Should be quite simple I would have thought.

Any suggestions??

A Nitrous Oxide kit would be interesting - not too expensive either

Avoiding all the things you list then surely the best way is some new cams, reworked heads and a remap. 50bhp for little work is a fair bit for a n/a surely.

Paul, I had a 4.6is before trading it in for my 4.8is. The 4.6is would benefit from a nice exhaust upgrade (as on the Eisenmann website www.eisenhaus.com ) but the only performance upgrades I could ever find were the well publicised Dinan ones www.dinanbmw.com which go up in stages (all the way up to the supercharged packages. The guys on www.bimmerfest.com have plenty of experience and you can find some good write ups on the bible of X5 knowledge contained on www.x5world.net

You arn't going to notice 50BHP on a heavy 4x4. Anyone claiming to give you 50bhp, ask them for a dyno printout - at best all they are doing is spinning it a bit higher or moving the peak torque higher up the rev range, which isn't much use on your particular vechicle.

And if you did manage to notice any change you would probably get bored of it, after about oh...say.... 2 miles.

You need to add a good dollop of torque to make it feel better - which usually means adding cubes or forced induction.
