Using too much oil?

My 318iS ('96, 1.9) has done 7,000 miles since I got it in August, and I've so far had to top it up with 2 litres of oil. It's nearly time for the second Inspection II service, so filters, etc. might need changing, but is this consumption normal?

The car is otherwise running perfectly (apart from the fact that I had my very first self-induced spin this afternoon on a frosty roundabout - time to call Ride Drive, methinks!)

If you ask BMW they will say anything up to 1L per 1000 miles is 'normal'.

Short trips around town will use more oil than long motorway blasts!
