Bargains or what.
Seeing as I am getting 17mpg around town out of my 523i, I much prefer the looks of the 7, I don't think a 728 would be a bad proposition.

This is purely for research Has anyone experience of running a 728i. Could they really be much slower than my 523i? And does it manage similar, or even better fuel economy than my 523i. I have heard the 528 is a better all rounder in terms of economy which is odd, also, it doesn't hang around.

I would be interested to hear from anyone with knowledge....shame our secret weapon (scoobyzoom) has defected to the states for a 3 month duration as he is a reliable source of stats.

Oh, and happy Xmas to all....

The one thing I *do* recall about running an E38 7 series is that they're fearsomely expensive to maintain at a dealer. One day I'll add up that four year's worth of receipts...

And they're hard on brakes, suspension and tyres. Er, at least they are if you drive 'em like a hot hatch.

Logic would suggest that going from a 523 to a 728 would cost more.

It's got a bigger engine, and a bigger body.

Expect to pay more to get it serviced at a dealer and more in insurance.

If the town petrol on the 523 is too much, can I suggest a 320 ?

I would not regard the 528 as particulary swift - it's not until you get to the V8 540 with it's 280 BHP.

Mustard, you know me too well.
Alas, I am settled with the audi for a work hack, porker for plaything. So it needs to be the family 'safe' car.

The reason I was pondering the 7 series is that I much prefer the shape over the 5 series, I can swallow the 17mpg (just about) and seemingly it is a lot more car for the same price as the 523i.

Just a thought....

Hey Mike, perhaps they ought to have you on Top Gear, to show that you can buy a decent Porsche and have change out of £1500 when your not

a. Not vertically challenged
b. a lanky twat with yob tendancies
or c. a bentley driving, pipe smoking, slippers and cords wearing
wally

...635 looks perfectly safe family transport to me!

Time will tell with the porker, so far so good, it certainly looks a good 'un. Just needs the brakes sorted, a good polish, and a visit to vosa for them to check it's identity.

Plus, once a visit is booked, legally it doesn't need tax, or registration plates....enough to give even the sanest bloke a thought about gatso's

obviously not thinking of speeding......

I was considering a 7-series before I bought my M3 (opposite ends of the spectrum, or what?). I'd rejected the 728 as they just seemed a bit slow. I think 0-60 is in the late 8 or early 9 second range. Probably not much different to an automatic 523 though.

I believe they're pretty reliable, but heavy on suspension as you might imagine. The 728 must be a lot cheaper to run than the V8s. Fantastically comfy seats, the only thing I've tried that was more comfy than our Saab.

Mike, Vicki's mum has a 728i with the m-styling pack. It looks lovely and is reasonably swift, if you don't want to race hot hatches from the lights.

They also get about 17 mpg, but do say that the servicing costs are very steep... however, get a good inde' and that should bring it down by about 40% I'd say.

And you're right, even the standard styling is lovely, something very alluring about a car that looks like a Royal Navy destroyer

I too am a sucker for the 7 series, a nice black one with large Alpina wheels would lure me out of the M5

I cant believe the 728 only does 17mpg!!!!

I have a 730i and my computer tells me that I am getting 24.5mpg average. Surely the 728 would be more frugal than my V8?

The 2.8 engine is underpowered really, we had a lift in a 728 taxi, his computer was showing 18mpg too

You must have feather socks! I only ever got mine up to 25/26mpg on a gentle motorway run watching the fuel suckometer like a hawk. Most of the time it settled, with a resounding thump, on about 18mpg.

Which is what I'm getting out of the 540i now: more power, less weight. Fair trade I guess

Seems to be a fairly commonly held view that the 530 is the more efficient engine for the size of car

Well there goes my next car change. I was gonna ditch the 730i for a 728i sport. I may as well go the hog and get a 740i sport instead. - I must be feather footed, I remember I got an average of 21mpg out of my old 840i.
