vmax IV

Std E46 M3 against my e39 M5 and the M5 came out on top

then up against M3 CSL, again from standing start and I was woopped to the 1st corner, did'nt get a good start tho as it was damp my side of the track although I think he would still have won the day.

but the terminal speed of the M5 over the 2 mile straight was about 8 mph higher than the CSL, not sure if the CSL was limited tho.

Shame the video never materialised

When you say 'real life' do you mean in everyday driving or actual performance capability. Faster top speed ? acceleration ? Round a circuit ?. Which M3 ? which M5 ?

Not that simple a question !

Both are limited to 155mph... alledgedly

I think there are anomolies [sic] in all of them.

I have seen an M3 reading over 170mph in standard form.

On a private road and all that....

Well i've had both and i would say the M3 is quicker to 120mph if you're pulling out all the stops, but in day to day conditions the M5 is quicker, particularly in-gear, due to the torque advantage. M5 also much quicker above 120mph..............

Different story on the a track or in the twisties though, M3 would leave the M5 far behind.......

Also had both and would concur. Stepping out of an M5 into an M3 - the M3 felt gutless below 3000 rpm.
The CSL's much better

Acceleratively, if you're prepared to be an unsympathetic brute with the clutch, the M5 (E39) will certainly acvhieve a sub 5 second dash to the usual point although to 100 or so it's merely acceptable.

Taking the traction control off and engaging the sport mode heightens things nicely but once on the roll, even below 100, if you're prepared to stir the box and redline the tacho, the car is hugely muscular and just about as bonkersly wieldy as an 1800 kilos saloon's suspension feels capable of coping with so that the scenery remains observable rather than participatory.

In the same way that Matrix eats green berets for breakfast, the M5 certainly enjoys the odd side order of M3.

Having seen the CSL in anger, however, one would have to accept clear and unadulterated card markation.

This all makes the E60 variant seem all the more inconceivable - but dribbleworthy.

When I got my first M3 in Germany, I had a Sunday morning run against an M5 on a clear Autobahn. THe M3 was quicker to about 200 km/h and then the M5 just started gaining on me. Over 150, the M5 was putting on speed a bit quicker than the M3.

I'd be further ahead at 200 km/h in the CSL, but I'd still get caught, I think. When I get the E60 M5 (probably 2006 now), there won't be much to touch me until the next M3.

evos, scoobies, jags, audis? What planet are you on? The M5 is actually quicker than the DB9 and the 997 in terms of acceleration to 150 amongst other measures.

Oh, just checked your profile: you're that guy who had a bad M5 and now hates BMW with a passion.

wink wink -

just saying that there are plenty of other cars that will keep up and go faster then the M5 in the real world, but without mentioning corning (weight) and braking which are the M5 weeknesses.

Have they removed the limiter on the M5?

Never tested mine to that speed as I dont drive in Germany or been on a long enough track to test it.

OK, acknowledge the wink.

All those cars are slower, but my original post shoudl probably have had a wink too. It's not exactly going to beat a Carrera GT.

My current car would be quicker than the new M5 on a long twisty section. That's what's making me wait a while.

I enjoyed my M5 when it worked. No question on that. It was good to drive, fast but there are a fair few other makes which do so as well and some more so.

No question that the M5 is one of the best mixes of a supercar and practical carrier. Wins on some areas loses on others. But an excellent packege.

Apologies as my previous post was a bit of a wind up. I need to grow up. Perhaps we may meet on track or at the traffic light GP !

Have you got a new shape M5 lined up?

It sounds awsome and may even tempt me back into BMW ownership in a few years!

I have, but I'm number 7 on my dealer's list and there are going to be very few in the UK next year, so I bought a CSL last month to tide me over.I love the CSL so much that I am happy to wait for the M5 or possibly even an M6.

I partook in a drag race at Bruntingthorpe a couple of weeks ago. All of us are drivers of similar skill and regularly give our cars a right pasting.

Me: E39 M5, an E34 3.8 M5, an E36 3.0 M3 and an E36 M3 Evo.

The M3 Evo was fastest to around 60, but by 100 the E39 M5 had overtaken it and was considerably quicker.

Overall positions: E39 M5, M3 Evo, M3 and E34 M5
