Hi all,

I've got a '96 318iS (1.9) and the brakes, whilst being satisfactory, aren't quite as strong as I'd have expected.

The car's coming up to it's 2nd Inspection II service, so I imagine that whichever dealer I use will suggest fresh pads, but would it be worthwhile getting some 'performance' pads (EBC, Mintex, etc) to replace the factory-fit items? If so, which ones would be best for fast road use?

Also, are there any other worthwhile mods (other than buying a 328!)? I'd rather not tamper with the engine because it's running v. well, but what about suspension (bushes, strut brace, etc)?

In my experience the brakes on the 318is are perfectly adequate for fast road use. Unless you are tracking the car or have money burning a hole in your pocket I would keep using original spec brakes and discs.

Similarly, the suspension is very well set up from the factory. IIRC Car Magazine described it as "an absolute cracker". Although, having said that due to the age of your car the dampers and some of the bushes may well be worn. I would recommend spending some money making sure all is OK in this department and the wheel alignment is correct.

I had a new one some years ago. It really was hard to fault. It could have done with more power but you can't really complain given that it's a four cylinder 1.9. I toyed with the idea of "chipping" it but never got round to it.

Quite honestly, providing it is in good condition then any changes would be for modifications sake.
