I'm currently thinking about getting out of the Co car scheme. I need to have a car that will love the motorway and be very reliable, fuel economy is less important, so I find myself considering another BMW. I have the option of buying one of our ex fleet cars; Y161 MGW, 04/2001, SE Auto, 35k miles, BMWSH, for £13k. I don't know at this stage if it has any extra's, I would imagine it's unlikely.

Is there anything I should know about a 525 SE Auto? Is there a reason a 525 would be being sold at what would appear to be under book price? (My employer isn't known for acts of charideee!)

Thoughts anyone........?

Edited to keep the spelling pedant happy

spoke to Scoobs couple of weeks ago on these (lookin at replacing dads 5 series shortly for something similar to what your looking at Jo)

The great man said old shape 5 saloons need to be £2k behind book (obviously adjusted for mileage)

so if anythin a smidgen on the high side of trade price IMHO, great cars though.

Also has it got leather?, pretty much a must have option on a 525

aaah, that'll explain it then. Something told me that my employer hadn't suddenly turned into the great benefactor!

Cheers chum.

Just checked it out on the BMW system.

It's auto and has leather which is good, can't remember the colour though will dig out some old colour charts

The main thing is, if you have seen it and like it I would say buy it!!

The cars trade value is less than £13,000 but you would never be able to buy one for less, you know its history too, which is an added bonus!

It will eat those motorway miles and keep you comfy plus it can't really lose much more money.

Hope that helps in some way!!

Price is about right... If it was coming from a dealer..

Its about £1000 too dear otherwise.

Trade value would be about £10,500 - £11,000.

Cheapest I can find in the network is an 01 'X' with 38,000 priced at £14,450.

Morning Donut,

Car books at £12650. Check out the spec.

Also no one is buying cars at the minute. I nearly said £10,000...

If you paid £11,000 for it you'd have to put it up at £14k because of the recon and warranty costs...

£13k is cheap enough I guess but remember it will have no warranty or been through the workshop... I think £12K is nearer the mark for the private sector...

I may have been a bit harsh... Not everyone can buy at trade I suppose...

So donut, Scoobs if you get a punter with a 520i SE(2.2) or similar manual transmission, ideally a touring (saloon would be considered but would have to be cloth trimmed) with sub 50k, low owners, FBMWSH and need to tradeit, mail me

Oh and the NW Sportscar cheque book for other lumpy kit is still open!

Thanks guys. I suppose the saving grace is it will have a no expense spared service history and I'll be able to speak to the previous owner to check there haven't been any problems.

I note the warranty comments, are there any known issues I should consider? If it's worth buying a warranty I will do; I'm saving ~£300 per month by opting out, chucking a few hundred at a warranty may be a good idea.

BTW, are X5's still commanding a premium? There's one on my list at the moment.
Registration number DU51YNK
Date of registration 04/09/01
Approximate mileage 29940

I can have it for £30k, NOT that I'd actually want it, if you know what I mean.

Not as good as they were but still good news...

£30k is good for that though.

Meant to say. If the car is out of warranty you can't put a BMW one on..

You may get some sort of mechanical insurance though...
