Pete, Apache, let me have a quick drive in his M5 today, and I just thought I'd pop in here with a couple of comments.

a) Thanks!

b) It's an amazingly sorted car for something 12 or so years old. Felt so very much newer than that from the driver's seat. Given today's damp and cold conditions, the handling was very reassuring indeed, not at all what I expected given that my 540i is a lary tail-happy monster in the damp/wet.

Anyway, I think I understand a little more why the E34 M5s were raved about so much when they came out. Terrifyingly good value for money these days too, with specialist servicing very reasonably priced too.

I can feel my wallet trembling...

I have been contemplating buying one of these, I currently have an E30 M3 but need something with 4 doors. But I was always worried about the running costs as have been told by a couple of people that they are expensive to run, in your opinion is this true?

Pete,

Are you thinking of taking the M5 on the track to see what it's really like? If so, a few of us over on the M5 Messageboard are trying to persuade the rest to go to Elvington in January for some fun.

If I still have it, I'd be up for it. Just discovered I can chip it for another 40bhp for $200!!

I wouldn't trust a 40bhp claim like that - the US ones could be chipped quite easily to release extra power as they were sent over the pond with only 286bhp - so an extra 30bhp by a chip would only bring it to your current 315bhp (assuming you have the 3.6).

You will therefore only possibly get another 10bhp which will not be noticable.

You need 3.8 cam gears and or cams to get much more power out of the 3.6!

Hi all,
Having also just driven Apache's (Pete's) M5
Can only agree with what Marshy said......very tight drive with an engine that can only be described as fantastic.....it was the fastest E34 3.6 i've driven so far with a clean pull throughout the rev range and no smoke on hard acceleration or starting from cold.Plus it was the only E34 i've viewed with no rust whatsoever on the bodywork....
