Its ages since Ive had one, picked one up today 94L 3.8 5 speed..............do they normally run a bit uneaven on tickover/sound a bit lumpy.........if my memory serves me correctly they do but will someone comfirm.

Yes they do.

The cam profile causes it. They tend to sound more even when warm, and after having a run

BMW car has an article on them this month.
No mention of lumpiness there.

Hello stalked the site for nearly 2 years and never posted but saw this and thought I would offer my humble opinion. They are definately lumpy so much so that I took mine back to Birds to ask if there was a prob.I don't notice it any more though.

And it is also normal for the idle to be anywhere between 750 and 850rpm (or slightly higher with the air con on).

If it starts stalling when approching junctions then it will be the idle control/stabilisation valve and if the revs die when you try to accelerate then it's likely to be a air flow meter problem (or the tubing coming from it).

They are quite reliable, but require regular maintenance!

Thanks for the replies everyone.........in the back of my mind I thought they did, but just thought id check.......i had forgotton how good these cars are.....the faster you go the better balanced the car feels........last of the hand built BMWs.

yep, it feels like a very capable bit of kit which becomes even more capable when you push it
