I think it is important to distinguish between an e28 M535 and the M5. The M5353 has the M30 engine and can be had for between £1500 - £3000. The M5 is a different story as only 187 were made making them the rarest M car. These have 286BHP rather than 218 and will cost between £6000 - £10000. They are not easy to find and so you have to be prepared to pay top money as people who buy them hang onto them as it's the sweetest M5 driving exsperience. I would not say that paying £8-10K is paying over the odds for a good car.
