E46's any good?

Are the E46 Variant of the 318i's any good?
I have had quite a few BMW's from a 328i to a carb strangled 316i.
We have just sold my wife's golf as it is a bit small, but saw a couple of E46 318i models on ebay. I didn't think these were in my budget, (just under 6k)
Before anyone says it, I know Bmw's are supposed to have 6 cylinders, but I know I wont stretch to one of those.
All opinions, good and bad received gratefully

We currently have a 318i E46, Mike.
Quite happy with it, VVT engine is pretty smooth, no known problems, nice steering feel with 205 section tyres,performance/economy OK, feels sluggish with 2 1/2 occupants + luggage (but I guess you knew that).
Recommended.

Must admit, I wasn't expecting my pants to be lit up with it, but they are well built and just that little bit bigger than a golf.
Yes, I do tend to chop and change, and generally break even as I buy most from auction, and change within 6 months selling privately. I don't make money on it as such, but it is a nice way of car changing for free.
You never know, I may stick with one that I REALLY like.

We've got an E46 318 on 01Y. Bought it in Dec 02 at 18 months old & 29k. Now at 3.5 yrs it's done 78k. It's a great drive in terms of B road bashing whilst you can cruise m'ways in comfort. Fuel wise 13.2g or 62litre tank gets you 440miles on m'way or 325-350 in city traffic. Average 32.8mpg since purchase. Cost wise service every 15k: oil service £100, inspection 1 £200, inspection 2 £275. Rear tyres every 35k £200. Front can do 50k. Build quality is excellent. If you see one with BMW extended warranty its worth buying. Our has had a new gearbox, steering column, wing mirror motor, speedo & obc, suspension bushes, no plate light holder all under extended warranty. This is unusual for an E46, but if it does go wrong it costs loads.
