Has any body else experienced what I would call excessive front tyre wear on their E39. I’ve been running slightly harder pressure’s than standard (about 4 psi more for the past 5k miles) to try and counter it, but both front outside edges have a smooth band around them now.

The middle of the tyre has about 3.5 mm left on them, where both outside edges are gone. The inner edges seem to be fine. Spoke to BMW, they said it looks normal, as 5-series tend to do these. I did see another 530 in the car park, which was showing similar signs to mine, maybe it’s true. Anyone else experienced this.

BMW’s answer was well if I’d like to pay for the £200 full laser alignment, and if it’s found to be out, then it will be adjusted FOC. But they wont agree to pay for the check, £200! Just for a check..!

If it's not a alignment problem - only one way to find out and that is at a dealer (should be £120 or so though).

The front outsides tend to go quickest due to cornering forces when cornering quickly - slow down on corners and you will reduce it.

The only permanent solution is to increase camber to make the tyres flat when cornering, unfortunately this induces a lot of tramlining!
