I put my 2001 M3 in for a service the other day. When I picked it up I was informed that they had done a Recall on the engine. It was to replace the big end.

Problem is that they have issued no notice to owners (as it's not a safety recall) and once the recall is done the engine has to be run in again i.e. 1200 miles not exceeding 3000 rpm. They only told me this when I got the car back !!! So for any of you with future plans please be aware of this recall and get it done now or when most convenient, as BMW will just do it with no regard to you as the owner..... This may also be an issue for anyone who gets the car serviced at a non Main dealer, who may not even know of the recall....

Pretty below standard really.

Just hope they don't take it to bits, then realise they have to replace the bolts (on some engines), don't have the replacement bolts in stock, then try and order them to find they are on several weeks backorder ..

I asked BMW about the recall and my car is due. Three weeks latter and the dealer has not contacted me. I have now telephoned the dealer and they don't have parts in stock to do the recall and have not rung back to let me some sort of time till the parts are in stock.

Great customer service!

I'm looking at an 02 M3, how do I find out whether it needs the recall?

It's for all up to July '03, I think. Check out the top thread in the M3 forum at www.bm3w.co.uk

Zod, does yours need doing or has it been done? Do you need to run it in, I picked mine up today and no mention of running it in again.

Mine's been done and you do have to run it in. Some of the dealers are utter muppets and don't know this, even though it is clearly stated in their instructions from BMW.

Running it in is a pain, but you just have to go off on pointless drives, unless you are about to do a long trip.

Makes you wonder. I just got the 330CS serviced, and it came out the dealership with the oil filler cap off.

WELL DONE. No, really.

Ok, the usual under 3.5k for 1200 miles it is then. Thanks.

Laugh?? HA - had mine in for an oil leak repair under warranty, but they didn't fill it with oil afterwards did they, oh no.

Twatters - some garages just don't deserve your business, and that particular bunch aint getting anymore of mine, even if they are the closest by a long way.

Many of them also overfill the car with oil and then charge you for the excess!
