In reply to my ad on this site, I received an e-mail from some idiot who obviously thinks I'm one...

"Thanks for the response. So I am okay with the offer on the 'BMW 325i Coupe' you stated ??? I am located in Scotland, but i want to present the 'BMW 325i Coupe' to a Cousin of mine, who resides in Ireland Also.,who just got retired from work-service.

The payments will be made via a Certified-check drawn on a UK Bank,as there is a client of mine in the England, who i can instruct to make-out the check-payment to you right-away,He willl be issuing you a certified cheque for 7000 pounds sterling,as soon as you get the cheque and cash it,you will then be sending the sum of 4000 pounds sterling to my Shipper in Ireland, and so i'll contact him immediately and get back to you.Meanwhile could you provide me with the following
payment information as follows:

Name the Check should be made payable to:
Address of the recipient:
Phone #:

Concerning the Pick-up,my shipper "Mark Andrews Inc." will then come over to your location to pick up the 'BMW 325i Coupe' from you for delivery, as soon as you recieve the payments and give your consent. Awaiting your response.
Best regards,

Richard Clapperton"

Do you think it may have been the name that gave it away??

Just to set the scene - only a handful of emails from this chap made it through to advertisers. The unique PH filtering system blocks most scammers.

I'm sure because I thought you did really well to spot them so quickly but that's funny .... I'll wait until the cheque clears!

But reading it, he's telling me to cash it and send funds to his shipper!!

Now I'm confused...

I believe that the way this scam works, the cheque does actually clear. Then several days later the bank come back to you and tell you that they've discovered it was a fraudulent cheque and debit your account.

Don't mess with these people - it's often linked to organised crime. Simply ignore them.

I've had a couple of muppets answering my Ads from here. 1 Wanted to buy my Capri, and looking at the mail, was obviously a standard letter as no mention was made of the car other than 'yours is a cleaner example than the ones I've found here in the USA'.
Can't see many people selling 2.8i Capris in America!
Had another about a set of wheels also wanting money sent on.
The funniest was the last guy who phoned me.
For Sale 18' M3 E46 Alloys. offers

'How much you looking for?'
' offers in the region off 600'
'I can get em new for that! They only cost 120 each!'
'Not real ones! They are £380'
'oh, they're real are they? I want them for my 318i E36'
'Well stop wasting my time, they won't fit'
'yes they will'

Cue Monty Python argument scene almost gilded with a shout of 'HE'S BEHIND YOU!'

We do get some nutters on the internet don't we!
