Diabolical!

Even after delicate use milder than diluted Fairy liquid, my 2 week old pads are grumbling and trembling pitifully.

Discs aren't more than a few weeks down the line either.

The M5 may well be the consumate all-rounder but this is one achilles heel which is ruining an otherwise impeccable performance.

A matey knows of one or two decent overhauls which I'll be adopting in due course but Kaiser Belt Buckle in the M department needs a damn good thrashing for these most risible of brakes.

In fact, they're worse than the old Lexus and they were a figment of someone's imagination.

As Mark twain might conclude, utter cack.

seems the stoptech 'big brake kit' is the only answer, and maybe some air ducts for cooling.. or you could just drive with some manners

I have had absolutely no problems at all with the brakes on my E39 M5. The car has been used hard at the Nurburgring with no fade, vibration or anything untoward. They are certainly not cack.

Obviously if the brakes are used really hard and then you sit with your foot on the brake when stationary, then a bit of pad transfer can take place, seen as a pad shaped dark area on the disc. This causes vibration under braking - something often incorrectly attributed to warped discs.

Also if the discs have been installed onto a dirty hub surface, then they may not be sitting correctly and may have their own natural wobble.

The final thing that could be causing the symptons is some sort of wear in the suspension components at the front or even a wheel bearing issue.

The M5 does seem to have its brakes criticised, but I tend to think a lot of the talk is guff. You simply can't use brakes much harder than a fast lap at the ring and the Ring Taxi uses the standard M5 discs, but with fast road, Pagid Blue pads, and that car is 4 up...

You should read this:

www.stoptech.com/whitepapers/warped_rotors_myth.htm

Like others I think your problem may lie elsewhere and not with some inherent design flaw in the brakes themselves?

can the problem be fixed with a new set of stoptech's yes or no?

Have a look over on BM3W / BM5W. Plenty on M5 and M3 brakes.

AP 6 pots seem to be the prefered fitment.

This guy might be able to help HTR|www.hyperturismo.com

PS DeR- Read some of your other posts after you flamed me last night, and surprisingly I am in accord with much of what you say. Shame you are so quick to judge others. Heigh-ho....

Afternoon gents

had the black beast for 3 days now and am slowly appreciating what a fantastic car the M5 is

How such a comfortable luxury mile muncher can turn into a complete hooligan tool is just fantastic!

However i have to agree about the brakes. They are obviously effective but on my car at least the travel is far too long and the feel far too spongy when pressing on. The E46 M3 brakes were much sharper and confidence inspiring.

I've emailed Joe at HyperTurismo and i fancy the AP 6 pots being slapped on shortly. The car should then be nigh on perfect

Yeah, but they throw them away at the end of every week which most people cannot do.

One 30min run on nice A/B roads near me caused bad vibrations and scorching. They definately suffer from poor cooling and need the front ducts opened up.
The ring is far from the worst track for brakes because of the long fast sections allow some cooling. Knockhill is far worse for brakes and it shows on most fast cars.

The consenus on the US M5 board seems to be that big brakes and open ducts will work well for almost anyone unless they try a 1 hour continous track session.

The brakes are fine unless you drive particulary hard. Ie 160 > 0 a couple of times or you ride the brakes all the time. But if you are a spirited driver then look at new pads and discs every 10 - 15k
