Just been to National Tyres to get the tracking sorted on my car and hopefully to correct the offcentre steering wheel. I was told they couldn't do it really because BMW mechanics can set the car up to track true regardless of passenger weight etc(?). I've never heard of this and they told me its a main dealer job.

Is this in fact correct and can a BMW specialist carry out the work if they've got the correct equipment. Can anybody recommend any specialist in Bury, Lancs or the surrounding area, if this is the case?

Dont know why they told you that, I own an E36 BMW 328i coupe and when I bought it took it down to my local National Tyres and they corrected all the tracking and alignment for me and last week I upgraded all the suspension to coilovers with bigger wheels and took it back today where they aligned it all, tracked it and set the camber for me.

There may be something in it, take a look at the ride height at the rear on either side. It sits about a finger width lower on one side, this is normal aparently.

However, I'm sure a decent garage could get hold of the correct settings.

To do the toe, camber and tracking properly it must be done by BMW as they use something called a KDS, and only BMW have the proper tools.

Front wheel tracking is easy and can be done by anyone, but a KDS is significantly more than this in price and end result!
