Just bought a 2002 M3 with SMG. I've only had the car for 3 days and already love it !!!

One question though.....

If I don't come off the gas before upchanging I get a "thud" sound from the rear of the car as the new gear is engaged. Is this normal ?

Any advice much appreciated.

It is normal. Best prevented by lifting slightly as you change or selecting S4, but if you want maximum attack shift time, the clunk will be there.

The little guide I got with the car mentions that "some acoustic feedback from the drivetrain is normal" or similar. It doesn't stop you thinking the back end of the car's fallen out, but it's nice to know it's normal

Yes, it is normal and you quickly learn the lift-off trick. When you are pressing on, however, you will get the thud.
