5 Series Touring Wanted / Questions. 4- 5 yrs old

Guys - I am after a 99/00 5 series touring for my wife. She has an older one currently.
Current one 94 525ise manual touring.
She loves it but it is time for something newer.
I guess a 528i is the model to go for or maybe a 530d. Is it best to go for auto rather than manual? I will only drive it on long journeys where I guess auto is better.
What do I need to look out for on that age 5 seris over and above the usual?
I guess the extras to insist on are metallic paint, air con / climate and full leather.
What should I pay for a private deal ?

Go for a 530d auto. The 'box really suits the engine.
As for extras, the sat nav/tv thing (comms pack) is always a bonus.

Spooky this topic, I was considering asking a similar question for myself as the Omegod Estate, fine servant it has been, is getting a bit long in the tooth now .
Considering a 5 touring up to £15K as the family lugger. Whats the best model I have no real fav, except that a 6 pot is really a must.
Are the stories about the 2.8 engine dying in a expensive fashion true . I understood the older shape 5 had problems with the 2.5 heads I beleive, anyone care to add experience to this. Anything to look for in particular as I'll probably kick the tyres on a private sale myself too.

Are you tlaking Nicosil bores? That was a prob on pre 99 cars (I think).

So anyone recommend a 530d tourer - are there such tihngs as good value BMW indi specialists out there with good stock and good prices.

What should one pay for a decent 530d tourer?
