Are BMWs all that well was thinking of getting a 1980s 318, but then I saw Scharnie with drum brakes, plus everyones got one. What are repairs and servicings like cost wise, reliability is good I suppose.

Have a 1987 M3 and a 1987 325i convertible. Had no real problems with either.

They're great providing they have been looked after, the complex ones can go to seed really quickly if not serviced properly.
Complex electrics can be a little unreliable and early computers are just plain bizzare.
They tend to suck gas and badly treated ones can smoke like a train.
But impossible to fault if you want to do big distances in comfort and KNOW that you're going to get there without breaking down.

I always thought Scharnhorst was a very capable WW2 German heavy Battle Cruiser!!
