Automatic/ Steptronic?

Looking at the 5 series around 1998 and some ads mention Automatic gearbox whilst others talk about steptronic. Are these two entirely seperate types of gearbox or is this simply termonology. Thanks.

Same thing, lovely gearbox.

The steptronic refers to he fact you can knock to the side into sport mode (hold the gaers more) or change and hold the gears manually

Thanks jumjum. Had the 523i manual box previously, great car but a bit of transmission shunt in heavy town traffic which spoilt the car for me.
