hi there, first time poster here.

I'm looking to buy an E36 M3 Evo. My question is does anybody know of a warranty scheme you can purchase as the car i'll be buying will probably be private?

thanks

www.warrantydirect.co.uk are quite well known, but I have no experience of them. Just check that the cost of the warranty and the servicing make sense compared to the likely costs of a failure.

I have personal knowledge of warranty direct with a Jag XJ8 I had.
They were fine with my side of things, "Take it into a garage, and we will sort the rest out etc etc"

I'm very cynical these days, about these "insurance policy" type warranties. Two recent experiences:

1. Bought a 325SE about 5 years back, which came with 12 months warranty. At the end of the 12 months they wrote to me offering a further 12 months cover for £350. I didn't bother doing anything about it so they rang me up. I said I wasn't interested, so they offered to do it for £250 instead "as I was a valued customer". Over the following week they kept hassling me to buy it and I kept saying it was too dear. In the end their final quote was £140. So what was the true value of that policy, and what proportion of the premium was profit?

2. Bought a 328SE two years ago. After about 6 months the power steering pump started to fail, rather noisily. At the next service I asked the mechanic to inspect and see what the score was. He said the bearings were collapsing and it could fail at any time, so suggested a claim under the warranty. I checked that this was covered (it was) and called them. They said they wouldn't pay out as it hadn't actually failed. I pointed out that this wasn't in their interest as it was likely to fail at any time, and if left would then cost them the original repair + tow in + new drive belt + poss engine damage etc. "Oh no it won't" they said, as the policy doesn't cover failure caused by anything you already knew to be faulty!

So I'd be very cautious about spending any money on one of these warranties, and only perhaps after hearing some recommendations from others who have had to claim.

From a garages point of view forget warranty direct as they have just refused to pay me even after giving me a authorization!

Gets them out of anything...

Don't bother, is my suggestion (from painful experience)

I got mine through the RAC. It looks OK on paper and in a language that even I can work out. I'm not saying it is bullet proof but I bought my Z3 M Roadster from a non dealer and it gave me peice of mind and still worked out less expensive than if I had bought the car from a dealer.

M3 evo's are notorious fo reating their £2k vanos units, so make sure they DO cover that.
A friend of mine had his replaced under a warranty supplied by Warranty Holdings, but IIRC they charge about £400.

Why not buy an Evo that still has Bmw warranty? I have the warranty and it has proved it's worth/cost many, many times over!

Remember the Bmw warranty is regarded as one of the best in the car market. (depending on dealer) and a level of cover that will never be replicated with an aftermarket warranty.

thanks for the help guys.

I've plumped for a Merc C36 AMG in the end that came with a warranty and low miles.
