Hi, i'm looking to buy a 840CI Sport (Auto) as my main everyday car (currently have a 325Ci Sport) to do about 120 motorway miles round trip to work each day. Petrol is not a problem as I have a fuel card.

If fessible, what are the things I should be looking for apart from a full service history - what sort of problems could I expect.

Finally anyone know what the service costs as likely to be.

Many thanks Andy

Depends on which year, but I do know the earlier V8's suffered from the nicasil bore wear problem, some V8 jags were affected too.
It is costly to fix, so would advise you giving a BMW dealer a ring with the chassis number to check whether it may be affected.

Other than that I have no personal knowledge of the 8 series, but am led to believe that you have to check the electrics thoroughly as some were prone to a few gremlins.

Nice looking cars though.

The 4.0-litre V8s were affected by the Nikasil issue, many being replaced under warranty. I think 1996-on 840Ci has the 4.4-litre V8, which isn't affected.

If you buy one, the first thing you do is get the sump off a check the tightness of the oil pump bolts, because they fall out. Really. Eventually all the bolts drop out, followed by the oil pump, and then it's Say Goodnight, Gracie. Just checked the bolts on my 540i - and yes, they were loose.
