I am thinking of changing my Impreza for a M3 Coupe, probably between an year and two years old and with the SMG gearbox. It'll be our only car (wife "needs an automatic" and it needs to be enough of a family car for 2 small children).
My only real requirements are the SMG gearbox and a proper third rear seat belt, although there are plenty of things on the nice-to-have options list.
Anyone got experience of an M3 as their sole family car? What prices for a decent example with less than 20k on the clock? How can I tell if it's been tracked (and does this matter?) or thrashed? What about buying from dealer vs privately or from a specialist? Any suggestions for good dealers/specialists in the South East (I live in Kent so anyone know anything about Coopers or Chandlers?), I'd happily travel far for a good dealer or specialist. Any options that I really ought to go for?

OK - had an M3 as main family transport. Warranty is vital (if it's UK supplied and 1 - 2 yrs old it's still within the 3 yr GB / Dealer warranty, which is extendable annually beyond that so long as it's dealer serviced.) For family use, it's probably best to have the 'less desirable' 18" wheels which offer better ride & handling. Both rear seats have ISOFIX and rear airbags are optional. Tracking is not a major issue - you'll be able to tell if it's been seriously tracked because the brake cables will have been upgraded to SS (easy to spot, you might not notice the pads/fluid). The stock M3's brakes are not really up to track use. Buy from anywhere, just check the VIN against a BMW dealers system to ensure all servicing / history is in order. Regards options, if you're buying second hand, personally I'd find one with Sat Nav / Voice / Bluetooth (not the best system in the world but integrated and useful). There is of, course, the M5 - now down to about £22k for a 40k miler. Much more the family motor & I still lament the day I sold it.
