Insurance Brokers
Discussion
I sent a letter out last Monday to the two insurance brokers. The one I'm cancelling with and the one I'm going to. They were also cc on the letters to one another.
Policy was to be cancelled WEF last Wednesday and start on the M3 that same day. My old car has been sold and the old insurers wouldn't touch any BMW with an M-Tech kit... So I had to cancel and go elsewhere.
The broker on the old car REFUSES to cancel the policy until I provide them a copy of my new cover note. I don't see what this has to do with them? They won't provide proof of NCB until copy of the cover note is received.
Can they do this?

If they're no longer your brokers and you've got no contract with them it got nothing to do with them. It is, however, quite common for Insurers to ask for details of the new policy - it helps them to keep track of how competitive their rates are. As far as cancelling the policy goes their intention might be to ensure that you do have cover in place before they cancel. It's strange though, because the onus is on you to maintain Insurance - you can't tax a car without it (for example).
Surely your cover note or certificate from last year has details of your NCB? If you can confirm that you had no claims under the last policy period your new Insurers can just add a year to the NCB shown on your old cover note / certificate.
I always pay insurance in full but perhaps monthly would be wiser!
I don't have a problem providing my cover note to them but I just don't see why they should have it. After all that car is sold and they wouldn't touch me on what I bought. I asked about a 318 with M-Tech kit and the answer was no. So no chance of an M3 Evo convertible... A shame as end of August and I'd have earned another years NCB.
My last renewal letter doesn't mention NCB - just the renewal premium and car details. I do however have the old cover note.
To save hassle I'll let them have a copy of what they need but can't help but think they are being awkward!
