E36 Automatic Transmission Fluid Change

I have just obtained a 1996 328 Coupe Sport Auto.
It is due an ATF change.
The Haynes manual suggests that these 5 speed autos without dipsticks need to go to a BMW dealer to have the ATF fluid changed, as it requires "specialist equipment" to check the fluid level.
Is this really true?
I can't face taking the old horse into a main dealer just to get the ATF changed.
All of the other service jobs are pretty straight forward and I'd like to service it myself.
