When's it going to be a common sight, d'ya think?

I don't mean galactic mileage, HPI register, LHD and the like, but honest early models in private deals.

A couple of years perhaps? They seem to be around the £25k mark now, which is a 35% drop in 3 years.

Your opinions, please, as I'm thinking ahead

Where have you seen one for £25k? The cheapest one on BMW's used car list is £30k and that has 60k miles on it.

I can't see them going down to £20k for at least two years.

Been doing the usual trawl through Auto Trader - £26k to £28k asking price for a few cars equates to £25k with a bit of negotiation, I reckon.

Two years should give me a bit of time to save...

There are plenty around sub £30K aren't there? I remember when I bought my previous shape M3 for £30K from a dealer - now it seems that the E46 model is back at that price point too.

The ones for £25K seem to have a minimum spec though - and there are a lot of the yellow/laguna seca colours at the cheaper end of the price range. Looks like they are the worst colours for resale - pity because I quite like them!

I don't think it'll be long before they hit £20K i'm afraid - my M5 has had absolutely no takers at £21K and so it looks like it's worth sub- £20K if i'm honest. Shocking, but true. And I can see the M3 going the same way.

I know E39 M5s have been a bit of a bargain for a while now (considering the first ones were £60k new).

If when the new M5 comes out there is a further drop in the E39 prices, I'll be seriously tempted - I'm talking about next summer at the earliest.
