Hi,

A friend of mine is looking at second hand 540's, just wondered if there was anything in particular he should look out for with the car? Common faults etc?

E34 or E39 variant?

The earlier 4 litre V8's suffered from Nikasil.

Just looked for the usual signs of abuse. They are big powerful cars, so suspension and its related components will get lunched quite regularly.

They're pretty bulletproof really.

Not quite a 540 but my mates selling his 535 V8 which is a very nice motor. It's in the classifieds, blue one at £15k.

Manual gearbox played up on mine, but only after high mileage - otherwise very solid car right up to 177000 miles when I traded it for and M5 (which is crap)

You cantjust write of the M5 generation as crap because you've had a bad experience.

A 535 isn't a V8, it's a straight six. E34 V8s were 530s or 540s.
