Guys, the worst thing happened - my car was stolen last night. Was trying to sell it and got a call from a guy claiming to have seen the car in the Thames Valley Auto Trader - all seemed well. he came round to look at the car the same night, asked all the right questions, went out for a roadtest, stoped on the roadtest to check the headlights at his request. he then jumped in the drivers seat and disappeared up the road! W4anker!!!

So be very alert when selling your cars guys, and if any of you are offered an Atlas Grey BMW 318is with black cloth interior reg number is (was) S53SCR. car has a touched in scratch on the N/S/R wing and a small parking dent on the drivers door pls contact the either myself or the police.

incidently, the car that they turned up in was also stolen. So if any body turns up to view your car, driving a red Lexus IS200 on a 'T' plate - please beware!

I'll keep an eye out, Live work round close to that area, but its probably long gone now.

Makes you want to try and entrap them, all you would need is a car that can be disabled and locked with a keyfob, as its driven away.

really makes you mad.

will the insurance be OK as you had in effect given him the keys, I have always wondered what the insurance company would say if this happened.

Really sorry for you and hope it all works out well and does not cost you too much.

Sorry to hear your news and I know it's a bit late but this was posted on Blatchat a couple of days ago, don't know if it's connected

This is a message for anyone selling a car. We have in the Wokingham District area a prolific car thief who targets the cars when they are being offered for sale from home and he then either turns up or telephones to have a look and then take the car on a test drive. He has done this all over the area. He is described as a white male, 6'1" tall, medium build, blue eyes, light brown short hair, glasses. He generally dresses very smartly but has also been known to turn up casually wearing a tracksuit. May be seen initially arriving with another male in a car.

Any information please ring 0845 8 505 505 quoting URN 553 25/05/04 or if you suspect he has taken your car ring 999 again quoting the URN reference.

thanks Mark, sounds absoulutly spot on. On the plus side, the police called yesterday and informed me that they had a suspect. No sign of the car though!

Apparantly violence has been used in some of the thefts, so any of you out there selling cars be very careful. Makes you think though - how do you you safely sell a car privatly?

So how did you fair with the insurance then?

Guess the best way is to always think the viewer WILL steal your car at first opportunity he gets. call me paranoid but that's how I've played it in the past.

Or have a spare alarm fob... dunno if pressing it does anything when the engine's running? Might experiment...

With respect to the insurance company so far so good, they have agreed in principle to the claim but are awaiting police reports hpi reports etc. before they will proceed any further. Only downside - personal items cover is limited to £100 ! So the morale of the story is either remove everything from inside of your car or check your policy limits - £100 is only 10 CD's!!!

Im really sorry to hear that.

Its amazing the lengths that scum like this go to.

AT least you were unharmed. If they were that determined to get the car, who knows what might have happened if you put up a struggle.
