Stop start has nothing to do with it.
Like all modern engines, it was designed to be as light and as efficient as possible. The N57 is a remarkably good engine when in good fettle and is very quiet on idle for example. The old M57 was like something that powered a U Boat, always a hoarse old thing - but because they were built heavy and strong, had a very high tolerance for abuse that modern engines just don't have.
New oil is cheaper than a new engine. The way folk neglect cars just staggers me.

Agree with what you say, other than stop-start is known in general to wear the main bearing nearest the flywheel quite a lot more in some engines. So the manufacturers fit harder bearings (also to take the torque of modern diesels), which is why when the N57 bearings do go they take the crank with them.
Agree it's a superb engine, an amazing accomplishment of refinement, efficiency and performance when in good fettle. Interesting they went with more durable (and much cheaper to manufacture) solenoid, instead or piezo, injectors for the N57.

It does make me laugh how BMW owners moan about how unreliable they are. Simple answer - don't buy a BMW.
My 2016 330d isn't leaking oil. Dry as a bone. Chains were checked recently and they are well within spec still. If people actually look after their cars, they seldom go wrong.

No, nothing is infallible but it erks me when people bash on a particular marque and claim others are significantly more reliable, especially on a forum dedicated to said whinged about marque

I'm glad you are a happy BMW owner. Me too. They may be intolerant of sloppy/neglected maintenance, but that's a good thing in my book. Good engineering needs good maintenance, otherwise we'd be in a 1.0 Daewoo or something equally shat and less challenging and rewarding to own.

I have had four over the years the best being a 1987 E30 325i Sport which I really wish I had kept, and I currently have an F11 528i which I love, all properly looked after.We are a bunch of old meh sods on here aren't we

I also bought a Subaru Impreza Turbo in 1997 instead of an E30 M3 which I could have had for just under £9k at the time.
Little did I know what they would be worth now and it makes me weep to think of it
