Got some bits for the E91:

- Rocker cover gasket (+ valvetronic motor gasket and eccentric shaft sensor gasket)
- PCV system
- Crank pulley
(and all the associated bolts)

630i decided on Thursday it didn't want to start for my journey back home form work.

Took 3-4 attempts, luckily did fire up. Got home ok. Won't start at all now. You can hear the fuel pump whirring but otherwise totally no crank. Assume starter motor st itself. Weirdly enough, the E91 did the same (with no warning).

May need to get it towed to the mechanic, problem is my RAC cover only works >1/4 mile from home. rolleyes

Sounds like a pain. The starter motor is doable if a bit of a faff. I’d assume that you’d have more room on the 6 series compared to a 1 series like I did it on a few weeks ago.
Definitely faff, have to remove inlet manifold etc as you know. We'll see.

I had a 2004 645 that did similar. Turned out it was the starter motor earth strap, not the starter motor itself.
Thanks for the heads up - will check that out.

Had the valve cover gasket and crank pulley replaced yesterday on the E91

PCV to do (garage wanted to order inlet manifold seals before starting job as strong possibility they'd be damaged on removal).

Was also helpfully informed by garage that NS front tyre edge was low...like starting to show cord low! eek (Must admit, not the first time I've been caught out by BMW inner edge tyre wear - must be the negative camber). 2x Goodyear Eagle F1 RFTs ordered for fitting Saturday.

I've owned the car for nearly nine years and every time I've opened the bonnet I've been greeted by this tape holding together the rubber boot which leads in to the air filter housing, it hasn't caused any ill-effects engine wise which is why I haven't replaced it before now.
I respect your thrifty 'if it ain't broke...' attitude. thumbup

The E90 330d was terrible for this as well. We noticed it loads because we did very high miles in it(managed to do 41k miles in it once from 1 MOT to the next MOT!). It used to chew through tyres at an alarming rate. We did over 150k miles in it over the 6 years of having it.

A great car the 330d was(apart from tyre wear). In comparison we managed to get 50k miles out of the fronts, and 75k miles out of the rears in the Merc GLC350d. My missus used to keep asking me "why don't we need any tyres yet?!". hehe
I feel quite ashamed for being caught out with it so badly.

Was driving to train station yesterday pm and had the red warning:

Admittedly ignored it (because RFTs). By the time got to the station tyre was flat as a flat thing. Had a day out in London (not Queen related) Drove home last night and can confirm RFTs actually do work very well!

Had to use the car for work this morning. Tyre would only hold 1.2 bar.

Properly shagged on the inside

Halfords straight after work

Sorted.

Where did it let go?

Take it, that if wasn’t at home or are you just trying to avoid the ball ache of doing it yourself?
The previous evening on way home from work, it struggled to start. On first attempt, nothing. Then on the 3rd or 4th attempt finally started. Thought it odd as no reason to suddenly have problems.

When I got home, parked up, tried to start it - nothing. Just click and the sound of the fuel pump. Tried the whole bash the start with a breaker bar thing, but no success (access is an arse ache anyway). Greenflag came today, agreed likely starter motor, so off it goes.

Oddly enough, had the same thing with the E91. Sudden starter motor fail when wife was shopping in the village.

That’s annoying. Access is indeed a pig!

How many miles has the car done?
About 95kish iirc.

My E91 did the exact same thing years ago, slow to start twice then next day nothing but clicking relay. Odd how they go like that with little warning.
One of those things I suppose. #annoying

630i is back after the starter motor replacement.

While they were removing the inlet manifold, one of the PCV hoses cracked/split so decided to have the whole system replaced (apparently good job as was totally gummed up inside).

Final bit of work on the E91 for the time being, PCV replacement and a OS lower control arm.

Need to get tracking sorted at some point as seems to be pulling to the left. (I hate getting tracking done, never seems to be done properly IME).

Change of alloys today, together with repair of a couple of dents latter courtesy of mobile dent repair.

Looks good. cool Normally I'm not a fan of period/model incorrect alloys (there's a 1er down the road on MV1s that causes me 'angst' every time I drive past biggrin) but that looks nice. Repairs look done well and cool numberplate BTW. Respiratory physician with a special interest in pulmonary emboli? wink

Bought OE rubber mats for the E91. I notice it's tricky to locate OE rubber mats for the 630i. Might have to email Cotswold.

Bought one of those BMW Tyre mobility kits for the 630i (as moved the one had to wife's X5).

Booked the 630i for oil change at local mechanic (supplying the oil and filter myself). Too cold to be faffing about under the car at the mo.
