After 2 years and 28 days, It's time to move on, yep I decided to put the 'Z' for sale.

The private plate has been transferred on to my wife's car temporarily (I hope).

Its time again to reflect (current petrol prices, market for bigger engine cars)gather the finances, buy something cheap with good mpg and start building a new nest egg.

I had a test drive in a VW Lupo 1.0E today -260 bhp over the Z and thought, this is the ladder to the next performance car.

Anybody got any ideas for a cheap alternative for the time being ?, budget upto 5K

Thanks.

I had to read this bit more than a few times until I realised you were talking negative bhp instead of saying you drove a very powerful Lupo.

Mazda2, different engines to choose from, very decent chassis and 900kg, makes it decent fun, my 1.4TDI was really economical too, 55mpg.

PS I've been missing my Z since I let it go frown

I'll probably miss mine once it has gone.

I was thinking of getting a small diesel or petrol engined car, I want the costs to be as low as possible 45mpg or more would do the job. I've set myself a budget of £100 a month the rest can go towards the next car.

Does £100 sound sensible, the car could either be bought outright, part financed and must include fuel.

I've been thinking the same thought recently... A mile to work each morning and the same journey home is a bit of a waste - especially when it's £85 to fill a tank (although that does last me 3 weeks).

The Z isn't the most frugal car on petrol!. I travel about 22 miles a day and average 19.4 - 21mpg.

Sounds about right. However, on our first long run in ages we were cruising at 50mph (roadworks) and saw 38mpg. Even cruising at 70 I was getting 32... However, on the way home that night a 911 Turbo S came flying past me and I was given permission to follow. MPG gauge now reads less than 32!

A mile? Just walk/bike and save the fuel for fun!
