STI PPP performance?
Discussion
Currently drive an E39 M5 and briefly considered one of these before I bought the M. Now I was talking to a friend in the pub who has driven my car and he mentioned he'd been out in one of these that day. When I asked him how it compared to mine (in straight line speed obviously) he said he didn't want to offend me but the sti would walk the M5 up to 140 mph.. now I know these cars are quick but I wouldn't have thought that once moving that it would embarrass an M5? Anyone had both cars for an opinion?
off the line and to 60 the STi is quick (with or without PPP)... against an M5 on a longer run you would lose... however, this is an interesting video (it could be a crap driver in the lambo, or a highly modded STi)...

If you know how best to launch a packed STI, without bogging down, you can embarrass some serious metal, a standard M5, from 0 to 100 should be easy meat. It starts to even out from 100 to flat out. I was totally shocked how quickly my STI accelerated, once I learned how to launch it properly, it really punches well above it's weight.
In terms of drag racing, the STI would be out ahead at first, but the M5 would close the gap towards the top speeds. On a track it might be more even, I think it would depend on who was driving. On a real road, particularly a twisty one with a patchy, broken surface, especially on a wet day, the STI would be more the planted car.
But I suppose it's all moot, how often do you go out in your M5 and find an Impreza wanting to race you? On that token, don't be offended, but despite the price difference and perceived "chav" image that the Impreza may have taken on to some, it's a very quick and grippy car and could easily take on an M5 if this theoretical racing thing interests you.

In terms of standard newage STi PPPs then yeah Vixpy is about right - the AWD would get the Impreza off the line sharpish and then the BMW would claw it back given enough time..all other things being equal.
You don't usually see these 2 cars squaring up on the road though...mainly because M5 drivers are on the whole wise enough to realise that you never really know exactly what an STi is packing - 260, 350, 400, 450bhp - all look the flipping same from the side !!

Read somewhere that a standard wrx has the same 0-30 time as a mclaren f1 !
Shows how quick it is off the line.
I don't think F1 cars are designed to be quick off the line as they only start from a stop a few times in a race. I doubt they have the down force at slow speeds to put their power down.Shows how quick it is off the line.
Comparing an M5 (or any big powerful salon) to a rally rep is a bit daft really as they are intended for different things.

Tis possible I guess. The problem would be an F1 car breaking traction with only RWD, but as soon as traction is consistently achieved it would be off into the distance !NorthDownsScooby said:

Let's face it, any numpty can drive in a straight line and put his foot down till he bricks it or blows his P&J up, specially in an automatic car however, 0-60, 0-100, 0-140 times mean little in the real world and M5's and scoobys aren't meant just for driving in straight lines.
Have a look at standard M5 ring times and compare those to STi PPP times if there are any about. I appreciate though it can differ greatly for a number of reasons with one of the main ones being driver ability.
If you're that bothered about straight line speed look the qtr mile times.
2007 BMW M5 - 12.4s
2007 WRX STi - 13.3s
Add another 30-40bhp/torque to the STi via the PPP route and it might see 12.9-13.0s but clearly the standard M5 has a shedload of torque out of the box, much more than the Sti even with PPP (PPP nothing special), and torque is what makes for a quick car.
I think over 90mph in a straight line the PPP driver would be seriously embarrassed. When it comes to the UK twisties though, PPP or not, i'd rather be in a Subaru!!

They're talking about the E39 M5, which is the previous model to that - I found a time of 13.2s listed, so not much different. 400bhp though so it will still pull away pretty easily after that.2007 BMW M5 - 12.4s

Its actually a road car !Comparing an M5 (or any big powerful salon) to a rally rep is a bit daft really as they are intended for different things.
A friend of mine had a E39 M5, never tried any standing starts but quite sure the Impreza would take it. We did a few rolling 30-100 runs and things were very close but the M5 would pull around half a car length by 100 and above that would start to get into its stride. My STI (Hawkeye) is power wise completely standard and the M5 had an aftermarket full exhaust (which sounded amazing!) so would think the M5 would have been running an easy 100bhp advantage.
As most others have already said, depends alot on the person behind the wheel but generally on a twisty English road the Impreza would certainly be my weapon of choice. The M5 owner, another fellow PH'er would probably disagree as he enjoyed going round everything sideways and the M5 was certainly good at that

Freind has an 03 sti ppp 305bhp, and it really is savage. Turbo hits very hard 4k revs upwards. When he red lines it through the first 4 gears it really goes, makes me chuckle everytime. It would deffo be faster up to 100 MPH, but then i'd expect the M5 to get into its stride, and by 140 i'd expect the M5 to come past easily. All guess work based on passenger rides of said cars.
The Subaru feels very quick up to 100mph due to silly boost engine, short gears and relentless grip. 100mph+ and its big spoiler, brick like front end & 4wd slow it down.
Would be an interesting race!
