Why have they done this? Had a few conversations with a bloke at japanese-direct-imports.co.uk about this. Also, post 1997 car you want to import must have an SVA Model Report completed, which costs around £10,000 per model. So the whole import market is a bit screwed, and I can't understand why the government have done it
It gets worse.
Even if the car is put back to standard (as the model report will only realistically be done for standard cars) any post '97 car will have to pass current emission regulations. This could be a disaster for RX7's and skyline GTRs as getting them to pass will be expensive (or maybe not possible).
But (and it is a but) they may not enforce this too strictly. Everyone seems to be panicking at the moment, in 6 months it may well all calm down again.
My guess is that it will still be possible to import practically anything just that it will be more expensive. At the end of the day the govt just wants more money. Either that or someone from the car industry has lobbied them to close this loophole.

I sure hope so, it's been a topic on the scooby boards also...I know importers have rushed a few skylines etc over to beat the regs, it may be that things like big bhp supra's/skylines will come over, be converted to stock trim (for which there will be reports available)for SVA by specialists, then re-kitted for delivery...and that will be priced in.

It's actually been this way for a while, they just closed the 'disabled' loophole on 1st April, where you could get nutter Jap cars through by claiming they were disabled transport (or something like that).
It's bad news, and understandably been a hot topic on most of the Jap forums, hopefully some bright spark will find a loophole to get round the emissions regulations as this is apparently one of the biggest stumbling blocks. Otherwise it could mean no more Skyline GTRs (good news if you already own one though).
Have a look at www.modelreports.com for more info.

When I went to poland a few years ago there were queues of bodys and axels from cars going over the border from germany.
The reason being that there was a lower tax on car parts then on cars. Therefore they took all the suspention off put it all on 2 seperate trailers and drove it over the border and put it back together.
Can the same be done here?
