I have one. They are great fun! 4k for a decent 2nd hand roadster/mx5, and then there are loads of turbo options from a (fitted) HKS system (2k) up to a full FM2 system (5k).
Check out www.flyinmiata.com for insperation.
I have an FM2 which is currently putting down 230bhp at the wheels, which is quick!

There is also the supercharged route to take. Some very simple installs available too. Bolt straight on for 160bhp, much more potential available too. try www.jacksonracing.com
Having owned several other Turbo'd Mazda's they are very addictive. MX5's can easily handle 200bhp without any chassis modifications.
I have a 1.8 BG Turbo engine in my other Mazda pushing a lowly 220bhp & thats fast enough.
Oooh Darth Vader noises.........

I have the JRSC kit, but anyone going for a SC kit today would be well advised to go for the BRP MP62 kit, based on the bigger MP62 Eaton blower (as opposed to the M45 blower in the JRSC) for more ponies

I have a similar setup to Ben's but mine's a 1.8 pushing out 250 odd BHP. As Ben says they're great fun - the best thing about it for me is that no-one expects a seriously quick MX-5. Performance wise I've been neck and neck with both a 911 and an F355 from 40-100+ Getting there is not exactly cheap as you get what you pay for and there's always something else to tweak / change / polish but it's still cheap performance compared to the big guns.
Where abouts are you in the North West, The DJ? I'm in that neck of the woods myself and I'd be happy to show you what the car can do. Drop me a mail through my profile if you like.
Cheers
Phil.

Thats with standard pistons? Nice engine that is. I think I'll go and see Paul Sheard in Congleton this week at some point to get an idea of costs etc. Some good links in this thread people, thanks.
Yep, standard internals. My philosophy is that a built motor is not worth it. I'd rather run the one I have till she blows then stick another one in. I can go through 4 or 5 stock motors for the cost of a built motor. A stock engine in any Mk1 MX-5 is good for up to 15 PSI provided it's healthy otherwise. Rods are known to be a weak point on the Mk2 motors but they have a better flowing head so make more power for less boost. This is likeley to be my next major mod, a M2 head on a M1 block. There are folks in the UK and US with way over 60k hard boosted miles on them. It's all down to the engine management and tuning. I have a wideband O2 sensor and have done lots of tuning and datalogging to get up to where I am now.
As far as your choice of dealer goes, go and have a look. He usually has a huge selection of cars in. Compare prices with other places too. Dont forget that you're buying at the wrong time, now the sun's coming out prices go up again.
If you're seriously thinking about an FI MX-5 you need to have a go in the different systems available. They're all different and may or may not suit your driving style. The best systems are built round a standalone ECU, none of this auxiliary fuel pressure regulator, resistors in the coolant temp sensor electronics and timing box rubbish. It's these band-aids that make a poorly modified car a nightmare to drive in town and traffic. My car drives better than stock off boost. On boost, well you have to experience it ;-)
As I said, if you want to come along and kick the tyres, feel free.
