Skyline GT-R (34) vs Porsche 993 Turbo 4
Discussion
One irritating thing I'm discovering...
A 993T4 is 408bhp as standard. You take it into an MOT garage and you pass. Or if you're stopped by those mobile testing gits you pass.
Take a 408bhp Skyline R3n to an MOT garage and you fail. Need a decat pipe, see... bit of a hassle to get it put on and off (yes you can do it yourself or pay someone but its more messing about than I want). And if you get caught by a mobile testing thing you get fined...
Just a thought.

Competition cat?
is there a Crufts for cats?
Are such cats that good anyway? I'd like to hear from someone who has one on a highly tuned skyline and passes the emissions test first time. Everyone I know has a decat pipe...
Hmmmmm.
How long is a piece of string? For 500bhp I reckon the skyline is cheaper/better value. As has been mentioned you can pick up R33's with 500bhp quite cheaply. If you want much more than that it gets expensive.
Was the 993 a genuine 500bhp? Was that figure at the flywheel or at the wheels?
My R34 is yet to be dynoed so can't comment on mine, although I have a fairly good idea what to expect.
As regards cats, HKS do a sports cat which is not too restrictive. A guy in Japan is running 800bhp at the wheels using one.

I agree with Ro, I think bang-for-buck the Skyline wins, there was an R34 on Autotrader recently with 550bhp and was under 30 grand (it had about 80k miles on it though), I don't know many other cars with that kind of power available for under 30 grand.
I've never driven either so I wouldn't like to say which was more enjoyable.
There's an interesting R34 for sale at the moment, I shudder to think how much it has cost the owner to get to it's current spec, but it must be over £100k It's the one featured in the Skyline DVD going around the Nurburgring.

If I had 60k that's where I would be spending it (those stickers would have to go though).

I would personally be very wary of an R34 for under 30k. Obviously prices will fall in time but for now I wouldn't buy it.
Even though the cars are reliable there are plenty of dogs out there, often due to poor tuning work and neglect.
It is making 550bhp but I would want to make sure the work had been done by a top tuning firm. I'm sure all this applies to the porsche as well but take care if you are buying a skyline.
The black car is the prospec demonstrator and as such I'm sure a lot of the parts were obtained at cost. Still expensive though.

not bad until you reach a corner....
Blitz Supra monstered the 'Ring in 1997, in 8(or 7) mins and 49 seconds. I am told it was the fastest road legal time.
That would be 7 mins 49 secs. If it monstered the 'Ring, 8 mins 49 secs isn't competitive at all. A minute quicker is quicker than a lot of supercars.
Some pretty quick laps here

Building a straight line monster is one thing . . . but building and driving a car that can take on the twisties in addition to do well in a straight line is quite another.

It may be less stylish, plastic, noisy and a bit bold but boy do we have fun killing some megabuck supercars . . .
