In my current search for more economical motoring I've pretty much decided on either a 300ZX or 3000GT.
Both available for under £6k.

Thoughts on either? Is one significantly better than the other?

If you get the twin turbo version of either car I would not exactly call them economical, both will drink petrol.

Hence the smiley

Should have mentioned i'm only thinking about the twin turbos, not interested in the boggo-standard NA versions

The 300zx is RWD, the 3000GT is 4wd... but you knew that already didn't you

Oh apparently the 3000GT has all the toys a Lancer Evo has but they cocked it up and it is like driving a computer game. Lots to go wrong and they do... and it's hard to find someone to fix it. (All apparently, from what I've read in decent car magazines.)

Err. Driven both.

They're both stupidly powerful barges. But big heavy cars.......

Preferred the GTO to the ZX, but the ZX I drove was rather ropey.....

My driving consists of a punt up and down the M1 twice a week and general errands at weekends. So being big and heavy shouldn't be too much of a problem.

Any other recommendations along similar lines for a jap car under £6k, but powerful enough for me to not pine too much over the Cerb or NSX?

Without reverting to GT-Four Zealot mode?

No.....

(I really didn't like the auto box in the ZX by the way).

Electronics on the GTO are very complex, and a real bitch to fix if they go wrong (long lead time from Japan). Dont know much else.

Nissan 300ZX is a proper GT car with a verty good RWD chassis. 60000 mils service is a biggy though (cam belts), so make sure its been completed. Also check suspension bushes and exhaust (£1000 for full system).

never driven either, but on gut instinct I'd go for the Nissan...

Most Mitsubishis seem an expensive folly to me. 4WD? Why?

I had one of these for nearly 3 years. Great car I only sold it cause I could insure the cerb cheaper!

They are very reliable the only really expensive parts to replace are the electronic shock absorbers. They have all the toys. 4WD, 4wheel steering (goes round corners like its on rails! cruise control even on the manual & adjustable suspension at the push of a button.

All you need is a boost controller (electronic ones start at 100 quid) and you can extract around 340 bhp minimum.

They however weigh 1800kg so not the lightest of cars.

Email me if you want to know what to look out for.

Agreed. Not at 6K. They appear to hold their value.

But, late spec (1999) with VVTi, 6 speed manual and in black please.

Yum.

Thinking of getting a 3000GT as my next car - also considered the ZX and the Supra TT but I think the 3000GT is the better all round package, looks, power, handling, gadgets, comfort etc...

www.gtouk.co.uk is quite a good website if you need more info, I've been lurking on there for a while just trying to learn a bit more about the car.
