I'm currently considering a 200SX as a replacement for my 2.8 Capri (R.I.P. ).

It'll have to be the earlier model (around 1991) so the questions are what are the things to look out for and what goes wrong?

The gearbox went on my old '94 one. Managed to source a second hand one from some dodgy company in Manchester - still cost me ~£500. My '97 version has never conked out, but the turbo now rattles, the aircon doesn't work, the alarm bust and the seats have worn a bit.

Still can't think of a better car for the cash though I have to say.....

Plus I never got tired of the pop-up lights on my old one....

www.sxoc.com

had an s13a... great car... good fun, cheap to tune up...

watch out for smokey turbos, heater matrix can go, those rubber things on the suspension (name slips me) can leak... there's more on the web somewhere (ask on the above site)

Post '92 you get LSD (Orange sticker?), better turbo lubrication, and bigger brakes? I think... all can be retro fitted and are useful.

See here for my 1991 200SX S13 nightmare money pit: www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?p=3&f=71&t=39514&h=0

Use half your budget for the car and the other half for running the dam thing. Mine was off the road for 40% of the time I owned it.

Good ones are great - fantastic for drifting too, but a bad one like mine will make you want to kill.

I used the SXOC buying guide when I got mine and I still ended up with a lemon, so be very careful. My MR2 on the other hand has been perfect and is way more fun than the S13 was. Hmm, S13 - anyone superstitious?

Thanks Captain.

Some people do seem to have a lot of problems with them, particularly with the turbo and engine rattles. On the other hand, I've read owner reviews saying they've had no problems at all. Still makes you think though.

Just been to look at one this morning. Advertised as 'has scratches and dents, easily repaired' which in reality was more like 'driven through hedge, needs all front end panels replaced'.

So, I'm still looking...
