I've not come up with a good answer.

TTE are releasing a semi-offical turbo kit for the 1ZZ powered MR2 soon....

I dunno. It's the only reason I tried to talk the wife out of getting one (She ignored me and got one anyway).

I did wonder if it was a cooling issue, but if they use them in the Elise...

It's the best in its class (Hairdressers cars), maybe Toyota are happy with that?

Perhaps its a case of the powre being suitable matched to the handling characterisitcs of the car.

I dunno though, just guessing.

because the engine doesn't fit - it is too tall apparently. The TTE option will end up quicker anyway as it will actually have some torque.

indeed. Only what an mr2 owning friend told me as he was considering doing a swap. The head would be coming out of the bodywork, you have to remember that they will have designed new engine mounts etc to get it into an elise, I'm sure you could get it into an mr2 if you could be bothered to move the gearbox and engine down a bit or backwards and angled forwards, doesn't sound as easy as the TTE upgrade though.
